Our Mission is to build housing communities in the St Kilda area for people who may lack strong family attachments while experiencing social disadvantage; have special needs, such as a mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependence; be disadvantaged by a lack of financial resources when competing in mainstream housing markets; and have a history of homelessness or be at risk of homelessness.
In late 1981, a group of concerned rooming house residents and local people came together to raise issues around the lack of rights for rooming house tenants. The group was also worried that the closure of rooming houses and increasing gentrification of St Kilda would push low income and disadvantaged people out of the suburb. From this concern emerged the St Kilda Rooming House Issues Group (SKRHIG), which was formally incorporated in 1984.
The original aim of the SKRHIG was: "To assist with the preservation and expansion of affordable accommodation for single persons, particularly rooming house stock, in the City of St Kilda and neighbouring areas". This remains the major aim of the organisation. Within less than 10 years the organisation was responsible for over 200 tenancies.
With the introduction of the Housing Provider Framework Lease and Property Management Agreement and the introduction of registration for housing providers and associations, St Kilda Community Housing Ltd (SCH) was formed in 2006. Since 2011, SCH has been operating a social enterprise, T2M Maintenance Services, which employs tenants and offers cleaning, gardening and maintenance services to other community housing providers. During 2013-2014 the SKRHIG was formally wound up and the assets distributed to SCH
