Agency purpose / vision

PURPOSE - To partner with member co‑ops to deliver an effective, sustainable and member‑led co-operative housing program.
VISION - Empowered People; - Thriving Co-operatives; - Better housing solutions.

Agency history

In 2016 CEHL celebrated 30 years of co-operative housing. CEHL’s housing program grew out of the rental housing co-operative movement in the early 1980’s at a time when rapid gentrification of inner-city suburbs and rising cost of living led to increasing social dislocation of low income earners. A strategy for common equity rental co-operatives was developed, supported by key Federal MPs and local governments, based on Canadian and European co-operative housing models.
