To provide affordable accommodation and daily living support for socially and financially disadvantaged individuals living with mental illness
The Haven Foundation (THF) was formed in 2006 with the aim to raise funds and provide housing for people with mental illness. After a number of years of discussion and planning, the committee was successful in negotiating a 40 year lease of a former convent from St. Joseph's Catholic Church in South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria. THF subsequently secured funding from the State Government to convert the convent into fully self-contained units.
Construction of 14 units took place on the convent site in 2010 and 14 residents moved into what became known as Haven South Yarra (HSY). In March 2013, THF achieved registration as a housing provider and, as a consequence took over management of HSY on 1 July 2013.
The Haven Foundation plans to continue to develop long term accommodation options for those living with mental illness. All future Havens will operate in accordance with the Haven Service Model, which has been instrumental in the success of HSY.
