Agency purpose / vision

Northcote Rental Housing Co-operative is an inclusive, member-governed Co-operative that provides quality affordable homes for current and future members on low to moderate incomes.

Agency history

NRHC was established in November 1983 under the auspice of the North East Regional Housing Council with the support of the Women’s Housing Co-operative and the Co-operative Housing Advisory Service (CHAS). The original submission emphasised that "Applicants should have knowledge of the concept of Co-operative housing and enthusiasm for involvement will be a major consideration in the selection of Tenant-Members." Most properties are owned by the Director of Housing through CEHL are leased to NRHC. The Co-op also owns 2 apartments in a CEHL development in Abbotsford. Since its establishment in 1983, NRHC has provided affordable, secure rental housing to 105 Members and, in nearly all cases, their families. NRHC targets low to moderate income families, as well as setting aside 10% of it properties for housing people with physical disabilities. NRHC is governed by voluntary Board of Directors who are all Members of the Co-operative and democratically elected by fellow Members of the Co-operative, thus ensuring Member / Tenant / User governance of the operation of the service and a better understanding of Tenant-Members' needs.
